How To Make Patent Leather Less Shiny

Cleaning your leather may be enough to remove oils or waxes that are making it look shiny. You can make your own leather cleaning solution by combining 16 fl oz (470 mL) of water with a few drops of dish soap. Dip a soft towel or cloth into the solution and then wipe down the leather. Apply a small amount of beeswax or petroleum jelly to a clean cloth, and wipe over the patent leather. Work the jelly or beeswax into the leather with circular motions. Allow the lubricant to remain on the shoes for one hour. Buff the patent leather shoes with a dry, lint-free cloth.

What is Patent Leather?

Patent leather is normal leather with a high gloss finish. To obtain this hard glossy surface, in the final steps of tanning, a varnish or lacquer is applied.

The use of the word Patent most probably refers to the meaning of protection, and ironically, the process was invented by an American named Mr. Boyden who omitted to patent his inventions and did not benefit financially from it...

Its unique high gloss finishes has made patent leather very popular for dance shoes and tuxedo dress shoes but it is also used for handbags, purses and clothing.

There are only two simple steps to care for patent leather: cleaning and shining.

Cleaning should be done after each use with AQUILA gentle leather cleaner and a soft cloth; otherwise dirt starts attacking the varnish, eventually reducing its shiny finish.

Using AQUILA not only prevents the side effects of chlorine and minerals contained in water, it makes it very easy to dissolve dirt or grease accumulations (such as fingerprints marks).

Cleaning the leather as above will go a long way in keeping your patent leather shiny. But applying VERNICE will go the extra mile! This will give it the “red carpet” glow!

VERNICE (pronounced VERNI-TCHEI) can be applied with a soft cloth. Spray and spread the VERNICE evenly and leave to dry. It dries in only a few seconds and there's no need for buffing.

VERNICE protects and shines, and especially beneficial for dance shoes, it lubricates leather and helps prevent scuff marks and scratches. It will not stay greasy or sticky so it can be used on everything, including purses, belts, etc.

Notes:

  • Some sites recommend petroleum gels and other methods that simply do not work! DO NOT use grease or Vaseline!! Sure it may look somewhat shiny but then, literally a minute later, dust starts sticking, it starts looking kind of muddy, and there goes the shine, the class and the sex appeal!

That's when many people head to David Mesquita at Leather Spa in New York City to give their footwear a sprucing.

But Mesquita told Inside Edition shoes can be given new life with simple things most of us already have at home: Windex, nail polish remover, Q-tips and a toothbrush and a nail file, for example.

Patent leather shoes looking a little scuffed? Windex and a paper towel can make those puppies shine like new.

And for a particularly stubborn scuff mark? Turn to 'nail polish remover and a trusty Q-tip,' said Mesquita. Just make sure the remover has acetone in it, as that's the key ingredient that works magic.

White tennis shoes no longer white? 'Very simple,' Mesquita said. 'Mr. Clean Magic Eraser.'

His favorite trick? Take a toothbrush and a nail file to smooth out any damage to suede shoes.

'The toothbrush is the trick we use to bring back the natural nap of the suede and also brush out any dirt that's stuck in its natural fibers,' Mesquita explained.

'And then for those flat spots where the suede needs to be brought back, that's where this little hack comes in you're basically rubbing the suede to agitate it to bring back its natural fibers.'
